The need for re-education

Re-education: a way for people to stay useful in the economy throughout the years and decades.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the need for re-education: a way for people to stay useful in the economy throughout the years and decades. I’ve liked the Mindvalley University idea (going back to university one month a year, every year) and I wish there was more of it, more inclusively available in the world.

Especially for the people who are older, or somehow underprivileged, or just not as conscious and aware of personal growth.

Over the past 5 years I’ve had 2 family members who reached a point in their life where they felt they’re not useful (one in his 20s and one in his 50s) despite being formally very educated.

While it’s easy to say “there’s no excuse, there’s internet and x and y”, there are so many factors at play that are more critical than availability of opportunities that often go unaddressed when people think about these scenarios.

Particularly, I think us being (or having become) hierarchical beings plays a major role.

If you’re in your 50s and 60s and you’re suddenly becoming less valuable in the society because the younger generations are more skilled and better preferred by the industry (and btw I have no doubt my generation will reach this point in our 30s unless we have a deliberate growth plan), especially if this is taking a toll on your finances, you can completely lose your confidence and sense of self respect.

A sudden drop in your value, if combined with a sudden drop in your quality of life and wealth, can make self help completely irrelevant.

These all makes me think that sooner or later we’re gonna need some re-education services in the world that are built for masses. Such services/systems should be built to cancel out people’s negative growth factors (mentally, and possibly financially) before they can cultivate a positive growth in them.

Food for thought
